i know, i know

it's been a while.
this is the post after a while.

i have to admit, i haven't been doing anything terribly exciting. working. singing. we're moving tomorrow, so i've been packing. i hope this will be the smoothest move of my life. our current apartment is only 320 square feet, so we can't fit that much in it. so...yeah. almost everything is in boxes. we only have the kitchen, bathroom and a little bit of clothes/misceallaneous from the bedroom. tonight, everything gets packed up or taken apart. then we start moving at 9:30 tomorrow morning.

in any case, i wanted to point you to two sites i have found recently that I think are kind of cool.

go here

So, this site is cool if you're like me and like categorizing things. It's basically an online way to keep track of your closet. You have different areas that you can input pictures of your clothes into: tops, bottoms, jeans, outerwear, etc. They have a searchable database of clothing, but if you can't find it (because you're like me, and everything you own is like, 20 gazillion years old or on super-sale when you buy it, and no longer available online,) you can also just upload it from your phone/computer/whatevs. You can also follow profiles of people you know (or just like the style of,) define your style on your profile, make wishlists, etc.
Then, once you've built up your "closet," you say what you wore on a specific days, for specific things. You can have different outfits for work, the gym, going out to dinner, etc. all in one day. And for adding things to your closet, and choosing your outfits, you get points. And then they do giveaways! I actually won a cool pair of vintage Hugo Boss sunglasses back when it was in Beta, so this shizz is real, y'all! They aren't just pulling your leg.
FINALLY (I feel like I'm writing a middle school paper here, y'all,) it gives you stats of things in your closets. Want to know how many times you've worn purple this month? What your top brands are (as if you didn't know already, HAH!)? What your typical color pallet is? It also compares it to the "average" stylitics user.

(check out how I have more items, but they cost less. That's because I'm a cheap-o!)

That's cool, right? Yeah...I thought so, too.

Any number two, is based off an idea called the 'endless closet.'

This was originally an Australian website that did so well that they moved it to the US to try it out here. Basically, it's a place to trade dresses (they plan to open it up to other clothing items, if it does well enough.) Have a dress you don't want? Just want a new dress, but don't have money to spend on it? This is good for that!
You list the dresses that you have worn and never want to wear again (too many posh parties, huh? fancy fancy...) and you get 'buttons' for it. The buttons are your ticket to other dresses that people feel equally as 'get it away from me as soon as possible' about, as you assign your dresses (or the website suggests an amount, based on how much you paid originally) a number of worth in buttons. You can buy buttons, but you also get buttons from adding your own dresses, so you don't ever have to actually pay any money, if you so desire. (Except shipping. You pay to ship stuff. But then, if you order things, other people pay to ship it. So it works out.)
The thing that I love about this website is that it can only get better the more people that use it. Instead of feeling like I want to be exclusive, and one of the few people on the site, I want EVERYONE to be on it! Cause ladies, let's be real here: I don't have money for new dresses for each occasion. And even if I did, not having to spend it is so much better an option. Then I can buy jewlery! Or, you know...food?

(this is a dress I want, but I have to find some other things to list before I can afford it.
But I just kind of LOVE it, okay?)

So that's that! I'm moving, go check out those websites.

I'm also getting another VoxBox in May, which I'm excited about. And I've started using big-girl makeup (Tarte, specifically) and I freakin' love it. And I wash my face with Aveda and my body with VitaBath. It's like I'm a real person with real money or something.

Fancy.

ten on tuesday

Link up for Ten on Tuesday at Roots and Rings.

 1. What are your designated chores in your home?

Me: Cooking, Dusting, Laundry, Vacuuming (occasionally,) cleaning the kitchen in general (except dishes.)
Nate: Dishes, Cat Box, cleaning the bathroom (mostly,) taking out the trash. Anything that involves heavy lifting.

2. What is your least favorite chore to do around the house?

Dishes. Ugh.

3. What was your designated chore growing up?

My sister and I did the dishes when my Mom cooked (when I figured this out I started cooking. I HATE DISHES.) and then whatever we were told to do, when we were told to do it. Mostly vacuuming and cleaning our room. We had a cleaning lady who did the bathrooms/kitchens/floors, so we only did those occasionally. (I make it sound like we were rich -- our cleaning lady came once or twice a month I think, it's not like we had a maid.)

4. Did you get paid to do chores or was your allowance connected to you completing your chores?

We sometimes got rewarded, but I don't think we ever got paid for them. We didn't really have an allowance, either, after a certain point. We just asked for money when we needed it. I guess when we were younger we'd do chores and such to earn money so that we could buy American Girl stuff, though. But we didn't get paid for every chore.

5. If you had a bit of extra money, would you hire a cleaning person or would you save the money for something else?

Probably save it for something else. We live in a <600 square foot apartment, we can handle the cleaning. =P

6. What chores will you make your kids do around the house?

Probably the same ones I had to do, depending on...stuff.

7. How frequently do you do laundry? Wash your sheets? Dust?

Laundry we do just about every week. Sheets...we probably need to do more often. And dusting? Hah. Once a month? When the patina of dust covering the entire apartment causes me grief because people are going to come over?

8. Do you have a designated “chore day” during the week?

Kind of Sunday, but it changes depending on what we have going on.

9. What is your favorite chore–if such a thing exists?

LAUNDRY! I just love it. It smells so fresh and clean.

10. Do you do anything to help pass the time while doing chores (music, TV, etc.)?

Music or the tv will usually be on.

0.01×10^2. What was your best/worst day in math class?

I hate a math. A good day was when I immediately grasped what was going on. A bad one was every other day, when I didn't ever really understand.
20×10^-1. Who was your favorite/least favorite math teacher? Why?

My favorite was probably a woman who I never actually took Math from as a class. I went to her 'math camp' between 7th and 8th grade so that I could try and take Algebra my 8th grade year. But then my schedule wouldn't let me actually have her class, so I got stuck with a guy who didn't teach. He was probably my least favorite math teacher, but most of my math teachers were pretty heinous. Although, I did have some pretty good math TAs in the college. Mr. Haciomeroglu. Try saying that five times fast =P (Or, just once.)

3×10^0. Is it okay to be bad at math if English is more your thing?
It's fine. Some people just aren't that good at math. That doesn't mean that you can just ignore math, because you might hurt math's feelings. Plus, it's sometimes kind of useful.

0.4×10^1. How does this video make you feel?

Oh. dear. god. (in other news, this made me watch the original evolution video and I want to strangle people. EVOLUTION IS NOT A THEORY. That is all.)
500×10^-2. What do you like/not like about math?

I dislike math. It's too absolute. But I like knowing how to do things, so there's that.
0.006×10^3. What makes someone a nerd?

You know, you can actually look up the definition of this? I believe nerd is more smart and less social.

7×10^0. Who is the nerdiest person you know?

Hmmm...I know a lot of nerds. This is not a fair question.
80×10^-1. What is the nerdiest thing you’ve ever done?

Mu Alpha Theta and Latin Competitions in high school?
0.9×10^1. Do you think GraphJam is funny?

Yup! But not really because of the graph part...
10×10^1. Have you ever used math outside of school?

Yes. I do use math on a daily basis. Mostly stuff like percentages for tips. Also for adding things together. You know, important stuff ;)

new things, new things

I have purchased several new things in the past couple weeks:

  • Waterpik Ultra Flosser
  • Remington 1 1/2" to 1" Taper Clipless Curling Iron
  • Back to Basics 2-Egg Sandwich Toaster
1) I bought this because it was in an open box at Bed, Bath and Beyond and was half off ($30, instead of $60!) and because I'd been thinking about trying one out for a while (and BB&B's no reason needed return policy takes all the stress out of it.) The flosser is awesome, though! It's kind of like playing dentist, cause you get to squirt water in your mouth. It has a bunch of attachments for different things (mostly different dentally things, like crowns, braces, etc.) and no lack of water pressure. I hate string floss, because my teeth are super tight and it a) hurts and b) gets string caught between my teeth, so I feel like in between my teeth are much cleaner. Nate says he doesn't notice much of a difference, but he also actually flosses occasionally ;)

Our only issue is that it would be much easier to use if the reservoir was somehow in the actual tool, so you didn't have to have it attached to the bigger, bulkier piece to use it. But I know that would be heavy and bring on a whole other slew of problems, so I'm happy enough.

2) The curling iron is also awesome. I'm hair-tarded, and the whole 'wrap your hair around the curling iron' instead of trying to wrap the curling iron up into my hair has been a life saver. The larger barrel is perfect for bigger, beachy waves. Now I just need to put styling cream in beforehand and get a better hairspray for afterwards so that they won't be blown out by the wind as soon as I step outside the apartment.

beachy!

as opposed to...

tighter ringlets from my 1" to 1/2" taper clipless curling iron. =)

3) I haven't used the toaster yet, because we haven't done our grocery order yet for this week, but when I get my english muffins and my liquid eggs in, I will let you know how it goes!

the wanderer

So, I went into Barnes and Nobles today to wait for Nate to finish getting a haircut. I had already finished my shopping, and I wanted to get something quick to eat, so headed to the cafe. I ordered and got my food, and went to look for a table.

Now, you know how people leave books randomly everywhere in bookstores? Cause they're books, and that's just what happens.

Well, there was an empty table with a couple books sitting on it. Nothing else, just a couple books. So I moved the books over to the bar, where somebody else had abandoned a pile of books, and sat down to eat my sandwich.

Next thing I know, a middle-aged woman woman comes over and asks me where I moved the books that were on the table. The rest of the conversation goes like this:

Me: I'm sorry, I didn't realize someone was sitting here.

Her: Yes, I put the books there because I wanted to sit there.

Me: Oh, I didn't realize they were a placeholder. People leaves books on these tables when they're done in the cafe.

Her: But I wanted to sit here, that's why I left the books here.

Me: I can move if you'd like, I didn't realize that this table was reserved.

Her: Oh no, it's fine. How about -- wait, you don't mind if I just sit here with you, right? I'll just sit here, too.

As she says this, she precedes to shove her things (including the entire pile of books that I had placed "her" books on top of) on the table in front of me and set up shop. So I stood up, apologized again -- while she stared me down with a 'what now, bitch?' glare -- and moved to the seat at the bar where the pile of books had previously been.

And I cried while I ate my sandwich.

Because I was mad at this woman for being completely unreasonable and a complete bitch. And mad that I couldn't stand up for myself. And mad that she had ruined my sandwich. And mad that I was now crying in public.

I hate that my automatic reaction to anything upsetting (regardless of why it is upsetting) is to cry. And that once I start I can't stop.

But mostly, I hate that she put me in the position of being completely powerless. I couldn't stop her from sitting with me, without bodily forcing her to get up. I couldn't raise my voice back at her without causing a scene (which I am totally unwilling to do.) I couldn't do anything except either a) sit there with her or b) get up and walk away. And the fact that I was continually apologizing to her, and have her completely ignore my apologies and go out of her way to make me feel like I was wrong for sitting in a chair in a public place.

People are so stupid.

I find myself continually in positions like these. Positions of feeling completely powerless at work and outside of work.  I was in a position the other day where someone who is in a position superior to mine told me what I was wearing was inappropriate for the interviews that were coming in and her superior was mad about it.

Only, I didn't know interviews were coming in that day.

And I had worn the exact same clothing items multiple times.

So, on her way out the door, she just let me know it was unacceptable. And then laughed, and told me to have a good weekend.

(this was after I spent twenty minutes cleaning out some shelving for her to use)

I can really only take so much passivity, so much aggression, and so much lack of communication. I have no problem with being told I'm wrong and fixing something. No problem whatsoever.

But I'm tired of being stepped on. And only being noticed when I'm doing something "unacceptable."

This needs to stop.
