bathroom-capades

Just, for a little perspective: We moved into our newest apartment (same building, different number) on August 1st.

The night we were moving in (literally, we are moving stuff over two days and this is the first day we're moving stuff) we are dragging things from upstairs to downstairs. We get downstairs, put some stuff inside, and hear a CRASH from the bathroom. Concerned, we dash over there -- we live in a one bedroom, with one very small bathroom -- and open the door to a puddle of water on the floor and splashed all over everything else in the bathroom: sink, toilet, wall. Thankfully, we didn't have anything in the bathroom yet, so we put down some towels and inform the apartment manager, who goes up to investigate.

We hear back from the apartment manager that the people above us apparently have absolutely no common sense, and instead of informing him that the toilet has come uncaulked (hehe) and is basically just sitting over a hole in the floor, AND that their tub is clogged, they just let it get to the point where the water from who knows where in their bathroom flooded their bathroom floor. Since their toilet is not securely fastened, the water drips down through their floor and into our light fixture -- which is a piece of plastic held to the ceiling by some springs so that you can take it down to change the light bulbs. Then, when the water gets too heavy for the springs to hold, it dumps on our heads bathroom. Fun!

We're contacted by the apartment manager again saying that he's cleaned up upstairs and fixed everything, so we should be good. And we are...for a bit.

Then, it happens again, the whole 'water coming through the ceiling' thing. And this time it's because apparently the people upstairs STILL have no common sense and are "moving out," so they took their shower curtain down and decided to shower without it. What. the. eff. People. This is why shower curtains exist. I'm sorry you needed to pack yours, but that should be the last thing you do.

So it gets cleaned up again. And it's back to being fine for a while. And then it happens AGAIN. Because apparently the people upstairs didn't actually move out and they are still being stupid about their water use.

And then again.

And I'm not sure how many times it happened between then and now, but there have been several occasions where we can't even fit the two of us in the bathroom at the same time because the dehumidifier and bucket (so graciously supplied by the apartment manager) are taking up ALL the floor space.

This week, they fixed the caulking around the whole bathroom, so a little water got forced down through the pipes, which we were told would happen. And the tenants were told not to use the water until it had dried. BUT, they probably did.

So there was water in the light fixture, again. Later in the week. After it was supposed to be fixed.

I am not a high-maintenance person, but as much as we love where we live, including the management, general quietness and low price, this is driving me insane. We often have water and/or a bucket a dehumidifier in our bathroom, rendering it very hard to use, because of the size. And even though we haven't had anything ruined by the water, I feel like we should ask to be compensated in some way. Even though it isn't the management's fault that our upstairs neighbors are IDIOTS. Or, just have no regard for other people. I can't come up with any other reason that they would possibly allow this to happen over and over.

OVER AND OVER.

Sorry, I just needed to vent some frustration. The management says that the people are actually moving out and after that happens, they will be going into the bathroom to see what is happening beneath the floor so they can asses the damage done as well as if there's anything unseen that needs to be fixed. Here we are, almost the end of October, and there have been basically no repercussions for these people. They have been allowed to inconvenience us for the past 2 1/2 months. Instead of shutting off the water, they were just told not to use it -- a command which was obviously ignored.

I hope they don't get their security deposit back. Because that's the only thing I can think of that might start to make me feel better about the situation.

(I don't really wish that, I just feel the need for a call to vengeance. Vengeance!)

Ugh. I bet it's so frustrating! I live in a high rise building with crazy neighbors, one of whom smokes pot ALL OF THE TIME. It always smells.
